After General Braddock’s defeat at the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755, the British Crown authorized the raising of a regiment of four battalions for service in North America. Recruited in Germany and among the Swiss and German settlers of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, this regiment eventually became the the 60th or Royal American Regiment of Foot. The various battalions played a major role in nearly every campaign of the French and Indian War (1755-63) and Pontiac’s War (1763-64).

History Alive! at Fort Ligonier is an engaging experience for visitors to learn more about the daily life of a frontier military outpost in North America during the 18th century. Through daily programming depicting typical activities of a military site such as soldiering, manual labor, tailoring, laundry, and cooking, and special weekend demonstrations from 18th century artisans, History Alive! portrays the people who fought and lived at Fort Ligonier during the Forbes Campaign of 1758.
