Winter Quarters Workshop Series: Tailoring 301 Coat or Small Clothes

9:00 am - 6:00 pm

This class will get you started making your own 18th century coat or small clothes.

Choose from one of two options: coat or small-clothes (breeches and waistcoat). For experienced stitchers who want to get a start making their own tailored clothing.

Coat: The coat class will get you started making your own 18th century coat. It can be any style: military or civilian, focusing on the 2nd half of the 18th century. 1750s-1780s style patterns will be available with different pricing options dependent on if you provide your own cloth or not.

Your coat will be cut, fitted, and at least 16 hours of hands on instruction on sewing up and completing will be given. Experienced stitchers should be able to have half of the construction complete and their first buttonholes worked in a piece of practice cloth or on the coat itself by the time the class is finished. A short set of take-home instructions will guide you to the finish line using the techniques and stitches that we teach.

Small Clothes: The small clothes class will get you started making a pair of breeches and a waistcoat (vest). Styles from 1750-1780 will be available with different pricing options, once again, dependent on if you provide your own cloth or not.

We will start with waistcoats, measuring cutting and fitting on the first day. Once we have you started on those we’ll get your breeches cut out and ready for instructions on the following day. Experienced stitchers should be able to complete basic assembly of at least 1 leg of their breeches and the interfacing, pockets and lining on 1 side of their waistcoat. A short class on buttonholes will finish out the workshop and students will be given instructions to guide them to finish their set of small clothes.
