George Washington’s Friendly Fire Incident Commemoration

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Fort Pitt Museum's Assistant Director, Mike Burke's presentation "Made at Philadelphia & Sent from Thence..." Powder Horns of the Forbes Road. Followed by the unveiling of Fort Ligonier's new Forbes Road Powder Horn Exhibit.

Frontiersmen and soldiers across Colonial America used cow horns to store gunpowder. The pointed, lightweight, watertight, hollow horns were ideal for loading muskets to fire. In addition, the smooth, blank surfaces became canvases for carving personal stories, artwork, and maps.

Fort Ligonier acquired the Forbes Road powder horn thanks to the generous support of the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation from the extraordinary collection of Walter J. O’Conner in the fall of 2018.

A new interactive multimedia exhibit featuring the powder horn was produced by Visitor Experience Solutions LLC.
